04 september What do disasters bring us?
I think disasters are not unacquainted to us - it’s so usual to hear horrible tragedies, like traffic accidents, aircraft crashes, natural disasters and violent crimes, from media, that responses of most of us are just fugacious depression. Anyhow, those miserable victims may be quite far from us, and no related personal experiences are involved. After the silence for several hours, we may forget the terrible news the next day, and devote into our jobs still with the same happy mood.
However, once such evils befall our lives, we may be greatly shocked and suffered, and it’s difficulty for us to recover from it in a long period. For example, if a familiar friend passes away suddenly in a traffic accident, then such lightning bolt may drive us dizzy and mad. We may be dejected in day time, and the friend’s voice and expression haunt in our dreams. Consider the ice-cold corpse, the bleak funeral, the despair tears and crying - these personal experiences escalate our grief.
Indeed, sometimes a seemingly adamant life cannot withstand a single blow - in front of nature’s power, it perishes instantly. Unfortunately, most tragedies are impossible to predict due to the complexity of the objective world. Although the probability is neglectable, it’s fairly possible that a certain accident will deprive my, or anyone else’s life the next day, the next hour, or the next minute. Dread and fear are useless here. As long as we live on this planet, the probability exists.
Then what do disasters bring us? Of course, victims should be mourned, dependents should be consoled, from which the precious human nature like love and sympathy are adequately reflected. Yet, more importantly, I think the value of lives should be re-evaluated after disasters by every alive people. By realizing the fragility and impermanency of lives, we should get rid of the drop shadow of disasters and cherish every second of our lives. Our tears and blessings can not alter the fate of those victims, however, the destiny of the future is gripped by us; we are able to bring fresh flowers and mellow wine to the real-life.
